Miles Teller is in negotiations to join Shailene Woodley in Adrift, a survival thriller being made by STX Entertainment.

Baltasar Kormakur, who tackled the people vs. nature theme in Everest, is attached to direct the project, which is based on the true story of a woman who sets off on a sailing trip to Tahiti with her fiance but, following a massive storm, finds herself alone at sea with her boat in ruins. The story, which toggles between the couple’s past courtship and the perilous present, follows her attempts to save herself and the man she loves on a 1,500-mile journey.

If a deal is made, Teller would play her husband. (And, if the deal closes, it will mark the fifth film Teller and Woodley have worked on together following The Spectacular Now and a trio of Divergent movies.)

Aaron and Jordan Kandell, who worked on Disney’s animated hit Moana, wrote the script on spec. The Kandells are also producing the project, which is eyeing a summer shoot.

Teller will shoot Adrift before he moves on to Too Old to Die Young, Amazon’s crime-thriller series from Drive filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn that explores a hidden world of assassins.

The actor has two features lined up for release this year. First up is Granite Mountain, a true-life firefighting drama directed by Joseph Kosinski and set for a Sept. 22 release, followed by Thank You for Your Service, a drama about combat vets dealing with PTSD, which is set to bow Oct. 27.

Teller is repped by CAA and Stone Genow.

Hollywood star Miles Teller has revealed the pain behind his performance as boxer Vinny Pazienza in the biopic Bleed for This, a role that looks certain to generate Oscar buzz for the actor.

“Physically I was probably the furthest away from a world champion boxer as you could get,” said Teller, speaking to the press gathered at the 21st Busan International Film Festival.

“I needed every minute of every day of eight months just to be close to imitating this man. I can’t stress enough how special this guy is.”

Teller has followed up his breakthrough effort in the Oscar-nominated Whiplash (2014) with a similarly powerful turn as Pazienza, the five-time world champion boxer from the 1980s and 1990s who famously recovered from a near-fatal car accident to make a triumphant return to the ring.

“There is a certain kind of person who when the bullets are flying or the punches are being thrown, they go towards them,” said 29-year-old Teller. “Where that comes from I don’t know.”

Bleed for This, directed by Ben Younger, is set for release in the United States on November 18 before hitting screens across the globe. But it has first been wowing fans this week at BIFF, as it did when it made its world debut at last month’s Telluride Film Festival in Colorado.

Teller will play the lead role of Gilbert, an outcast aardvark, in the story of Noah’s Ark told from the perspective of animals. Teller’s known for his performance in Damien Chazelle’s Oscar-winning drumming sensation Whiplash as well as his performances in War Dogs and the Divergent series. Next up, he can be seen in Ben Younger’s Bleed for This, out in November. He recently wrapped Thank You for Your Service and Granite Mountain.

“Gilbert is young, spirited, sarcastic, and we couldn’t have found a more perfect artist to bring Gilbert to life in Miles,” said Stevenson.

Kjarval added: “Miles is an exceptionally talented and comically gifted young man who’s perfect for our hero Gilbert.”

Teller is repped by CAA and Sone, Genow, Semlkinson, Binder & Christopher.
